Challenge:
National Oilwell Varco (NOV) provides major mechanical and safety components for land and offshore drilling rigs used in exploration and production of natural gas and oil. A growing company with ambitious plans for expansion, they needed a strategic supplier who could keep up with the pace of their demands and their high standards.
Breakthrough:
Our partnership with NOV began with a series of small parts projects, but quickly ramped up. We invested $5 million in new equipment and facilities to increase our machining work envelope and capacity to produce the complex assemblies they needed. We added new processes and staff, and developed a network of strategic partnerships with second-tier suppliers to support the demands of their business.
Results:
Although WSI had never worked on the types of projects or size of parts that NOV needed, we were told that we got the business “because you’re the only ones who cared enough to keep coming back to us and proving that it was going to work.”
Our financial strength, commitment to strategic growth, and willingness to invest in major new programs made us an ideal partner for NOV in its rapid growth and capture of market share.
As a result, NOV has grown into one of our largest customers, and WSI is one of its largest suppliers. We procure castings, machine component parts, provide non-destructive testing, finishes and assembly and manage entire turnkey programs, with all activities transparent to NOV prior to our delivery of the finished parts and assemblies direct to its factory floor.
